November 2017 Student Spotlight – Vigi Diamond

Vigi Diamond

Name: Vigi Diamond                 Age: 21

LaBarberia Institute of Hair, the Cleveland Barber College has been recognizing our students with a monthly spotlight, for their talents, ambition, and hard work. From the month of November we would like to acknowledge Vigi Diamond. Vigi is from Beachwood, Ohio and started barber school after graduating from school in Israel, with a degree in Talmudic Law.

Vigi was in boarding school from the age of 14 and in order to make a living and afford things he had to work. This is where his passion for barbering began, as he started cutting his friends’ hair to make money.

Vigi’s biggest challenge/hardest thing to master has been putting designs into the cut. He is not satisfied with that skill and would like to become more advanced in that field. The most rewarding part of barber school has been getting to meet the other barber students and learning stuff from them. He knows there is always room to improve.

Outside of being a barber student, Vigi enjoys dancing, exercising, and working on cars. His plan after barber school is to open his own shop.

October 2017 Student Spotlight – Renee Skuly

Renee Skuly

Name: Renee Skuly                 Age: 28

LaBarberia Institute of Hair, the Cleveland Barber College has been recognizing our students with a monthly spotlight, for their talents, ambition, and hard work. For the month of October we would like to acknowledge Renee Skuly. Renee is from Euclid Ohio, a Cleveland State University graduate, where she received her bachelors degree in Psychology. Since 2012 she has been working at a counseling center for children.

In 2010 she installed dreadlocks into her own hair. She didn’t really have a clue what she was doing at the time, but over time, with much dedication and practice, she developed a talent and started doing other people’s dreadlocks. One of her clients happened to be a barber and was very interested to have Renee work at her shop. She finally made the leap this past April to attend Labarberia and jump start her career as an official barber.

Renee’s biggest challenge as a barber student has been face shaving, mostly because she was afraid of cutting people. But after months of practice and with great instructors guiding her, it has come to be one of her most enjoyed pieces of the barbering puzzle! Having come into school with minimal hair cutting experience, to becoming a spotlight student at LaBarberia, Renee feels that she has come a long way in a short period of time. She feels the most rewarding part of being a barber is when she turns a client toward the mirror and to see their smiles of satisfaction with the haircut that she just gave them.

Renee’s plan after graduating from LaBarberia is to work in downtown Willoughby at ‘Roots Salon and Barbershack‘, which is owned by the dread client who inspired her to come to barber school in the first place! On her spare time, Renee enjoys camping, hiking, traveling, spinning her fire hula hoop, slack lining and eating chocolate!

Becoming a Better You in 25 Ways

Inspired by a blog on the “Art of Manliness,” here are the top 25 Ways to Be a Better Man (or Woman):

  1. Define your core values

Defining your values gives you purpose. It prevents us from making bad decisions and gives us confidence.

  1. Shine your shoes

Why not? Clean sharp shoes are a staple to any wardrobe. Often times they define you.

  1. Find a Mentor

Do you have one? Who is it? Why are they the one you aspire to be more like? Tell them. Talk to them. Pick their brain and learn from them in any way you can.

  1. Increase your testosterone

Play sports. Join flag football. Go to a Cleveland Browns game (whether they’re good or not). Splurge for great seats for the CAVS game. Play basketball with your friends. Get moving.

  1. Cultivate your gratitude

When was the last time you felt grateful? Do you show gratitude to others? Take stock of all of the great things going on in your life and appreciate them every day.

  1. Update your resume

It doesn’t matter if you’re going to utilize it – just update it. Make it relevant. You never know who you’re going to meet and where you are going to meet them. Always have a copy readily available.

  1. Reconnect with an old friend

What do you have to lose? Who cares why you stopped talking, what may have happened and how badly it ended, today is the day to get back to basics. Let go of regret, doubt and hardship and text the friend you’ve been missing.

  1. Start a blog

Everyone runs their own business whether you work for someone else or not. Blog. Talk about your life, what’s important to you, things around you, your profession, your career and whatever else may hold value to you.

  1. Take someone on a date

Keep it fresh, get out of the house, be romantic, live a little. See a movie, go see a band and just feel the moment with someone else.

  1. Give yourself a testicular and breast exam

Why? Because it’s important. You’re an adult and you need to be responsible over your body, your health and your life. Suck it up and do it and if you don’t know how, schedule an appointment.

  1. Create your bucket list

Most people create a Will but a bucket list, that’s something we all can do easily and without getting professionals involved. Have you ever sat down and wrote out all of your goals before your time is up?

  1. Declutter your life

This involves your house, your car, your friends and even your family. Declutter what’s weighing you down and what’s in your way. Get rid of negativity.

  1. Write a letter to your father

No matter who you are, where they are, everyone has a few things to say to their dad. Write it out. Send it if you want or don’t, but get it down on paper.

  1. Make a homemade meal from scratch

Can you cook? If the answer is “no,” that’s perfectly fine. Get on Pinterest and type in the food you like. Poof! Hundreds of meals will come up and all you have to do is take yourself to the store and COOK!

  1. Create a budget

We all need one whether we actually have money to blow or not. Write down all of your expenses, what comes in and out, and see what you have. You’ll be surprised at how many times you stop at the gas station, buy take out or spend frivolously on random things you don’t really need.

  1. Schedule a physical exam

Just do it. Give up 1 hour a year and handle it.

  1. Talk to strangers

Every. Single. Day.

  1. Write your own eulogy

What do you want to leave us with?

  1. Improve your posture

Because everyone has a hard time standing up straight, not slouching and sitting tall. Improve your posture and it will improve your attitude.

  1. Learn a manual skill

With technology, we often forget we have the power to do things ourselves. Put down the machine and learn something from a teacher, a friend or a mentor.

  1. Play

ALL THE TIME. And laugh while you’re doing it.

  1. Start a debt reduction plan

Why? So you can start that business you want, buy that house and plan for the future.

  1. Start a book

(Finish a book).

  1. Write a love letter

To yourself, to your mom, to your 1st love, your best friend, your grandma or your child. Tuck it somewhere safe if you don’t want to give it to them and bring it out when they need it most.

  1. Conquer a fear

Just because you should. What are you afraid of and what’s the worst that could happen?

Every day is a new day to start fresh. Take the next 25 days and assign one of these goals to it. Make it happen. There’s no excuse. Then, after you’ve completed the task, declare it and share it with the world. Help them engage on this journey with you.Man with afro dancing

New Year, New Hair

2017 is approaching faster than the speed of Vin Diesel’s 2011 Bugatti Veyron in the Fast & the Furious. If you are looking for a cost effective way to make changes, the best option is to see your local barber, take a seat in their chair and let them transform your out-of-touch mop.

According to London’s best barbers, trends to look for are texture on top, long(er) hair, and lightweight products, the throwback cut, embracing gray & adding pastel colorings to your hair. Sounds like a scene out of My Little Pony, no?

Flashbacks or not, the styles for the upcoming year cannot be disputed. They are inventive and bold, allowing for personal expression and embracing what we’ve got to work with.

Things to tell the Best Barbers in Cleveland (LaBarberia Institute of Hair) when you walk-in for your fresh cut:

  1. “Get rid of my super-slick neat & tidy hair and give me something more messed up!” Our barbers will keep your side’s short, texture and embrace the length you have on top and give you an uneven edgy 2017 look that the ladies will love and the guys will be jealous of.
  2. “Teach me what products to use and how to use them.” Our barbers will tell you LAYRITE are the best products and Hanzo shears are #1 in the industry. If you have texture, we will show you innovative products that will not add weight.
  3. “Help me love my grey hair.” Listen, grey is the new black and you need to embrace it. It shows character and charm and makes you more handsome than the rest. Our cuts will showcase your hair in a way that will make you embrace it once and for all.
  4. “Take me back to the 1990s.” I’m not sure how many of you really want to relive boy bands, Britney Spears and the Spice Girls, but parted-brow length hair with fringe is in demand this upcoming season and you will want us to show you how it’s done.
  5. “Pastel me.” Wait, what?! Pastel colors are making their way back in 2017 and will grant you the pop-star feel without actually having to sing “Backstreets Back, alright!” We can help you leave an impression no matter what color you choose.

Visit us during the week at 1633 Golden Gate Plaza in Mayfield Heights. Ask for the “Best Barbers in Cleveland” and we will show you the royal treatment. Happy New Year from all of us at LaBarberia Institute of Hair, the Cleveland Barber College. https://labarberiainstitute.com
